Guild Wars 2 has plenty of fantasy tropes we’ve all come to expect in an MMORPG, but it’s also laced with steam punk elements. Smoke-churning machines hum alongside spell casting wizards and shamans, giving GW2 a vibe that distinguishes it from its peers.

The engineer class exemplifies this combination of machines and magic. Alongside potions, which they can use to boost stats and gain health, they have an arsenal of weaponry that rides the line between modern and arcane. Turrets blast incoming enemies with missiles or bullets, while the engineer arms themselves with a wrench, pistols, rifles, and more.

Watch an engineer commentary video

If you enjoy playing melee-centric classes, the engineer isn’t for you. Starting off with pistols, you quickly learn that a good engineer keeps out of reach as much as possible. The engineer works particularly well with a tank, dishing out damage while someone with a bit more armor and health takes it on the chin. If someone does get close, the engineer can always knock them back or use Slot Skills — unlocked at later levels — like Rocket Boots to blast away from them. Most weapons also have some sort of ability that locks the enemy in place, such as the rifles’ Net Shot, which wraps them in rope.

The array of Slot Skills available to the engineer insures that you can play them in a variety of ways. If you want to be more of a tinkerer you can equip a number of turrets. For instance you could deploy a Rocket Turret to deal damage, a Net Turret to lock enemies in place and a Healing Turret to keep you in the fight. All of the turrets have whirring cranks and bronze bands on them, helping them stay consistent with the Steampunk aesthetic.

The engineer also gets a number of Skill Slot abilities that allow them to equip entirely new weapons (and change their weapon abilities as well). There’s the Flamethrower, which can set opponents on fire as well as blast them away when things get hairy or the Elixir Gun, which can damage opponents in an area as well as give allies buffs and heals. Additional weapons like grenades and mines help to make the engineer a versatile class that can be useful in a wide array of encounters.

Elite Skills, which are unlocked once you hit 30, give the engineer some oomph on the battlefield. For instance the engineer can call down supply drops from the sky, dealing damage with the initial hit and then deploying bandages and turrets. Or you could just use the engineer to deal a ton of damage, dropping down devastating artillery barrages or calling in a mortar both you and your allies can operate.

The engineer is one of eight classes in Guild Wars 2. For more on these classes, you can check out our in-depth wiki.

I know Skyrim’s all about constantly chasing that quest marker across the land, but when you’re ready to take a break, wouldn’t it be great to have a place to hang your horned helm that’s worthy of a great adventurer with arrow-proof knees like yourself? Somewhere that makes Proudspire Manor look like a hovel? Well watch out Wicked Witches of Skyrim: the modding community has taken up this gauntlet with great gusto, and is dropping entire mansions out of the sky and into your game.

The Reserve

Without further ado, I present you a whopping great mansion right outside of Rorikstead. It’s called The Reserve, and it’s freakin’ massive.

High ceilings are a must!

There’s a grand antechamber with a few trees, some lovely banners, and three huge gates that lead into further rooms. One of which has a garden, one that serves as an armory, and a third that seems a little more cosy and homely. That one has a fireplace, a few mounted animal heads on the walls (always a comforting feature) and a bed hidden away in a corner. Just like childhood.

It’s got a functioning forge, alchemy table, enchanter’s desk, and even its own stable, not to mention ample storage in the forms of bookcases, chests, and if you’re too lazy to bother with either of those and want to just hurl your loot in a big pile, lots of floor space. Who raised you, a dragon?

The Asteria

I can tell that’s not really your style. It’s too understated, far too subtle. You want people to look at you and go “Hah! The Dovahkin! I bet he lives in a freakin’ giant Dwarven floating steamboat!” So alright, let’s look at the giant Dwarven floating steamboat.

Best. Houseboat. Ever.

This is the Asteria, a magic ship hovering over a lake half a furlong from Riverwood, to the west. The only way up there is using a portal statue, and once you’re there there’s all sorts to take a gander at (although unfortunately the Dwemer telescope is for display purposes only).

Like the Reserve, it’s got all the crafting tables, but it’s also got flowerbeds filled with different herbs and flowers all over the place. If you are a budding alchemist you’ll be able to retreat back to your floating Dwarven steamship to restock your pouches whenever you need to. It’s also got plenty of mannequins and bookcases — houses love those things.

Crystalis

But wait, this is still a little too drab for you? Not quite otherworldy enough? You once saw Superman and that Fortress of Solitude that he had looked pretty nice, right? Ostentatious, maybe, but still.

Beware of floating Brandos.

Alright, alright. Here’s Crystalis , situated a short trip north of Winterfell. It’s made out of giant magical crystals. You’re welcome.

What’s that? Crafting tables don’t impress you anymore? How about crystal crafting tables? Yeah, that’s right. Then there’s a Temple room full of shrines so you can get your blessings and cure your diseases. And, for the little tyrant in you, there’s a whopping great crystal throne — It’s got its own dais and everything.

And that better make you happy, because I can’t top that.

I want to believe. I want to believe that the rumors about an Elder Scrolls MMO announcement in May will result in one of the genre’s best games, but I find myself convinced that The Elder Scrolls series can’t introduce an MMORPG without losing its soul. I’m not saying that such a game couldn’t be good, I’m not saying that there’s not a chance for Bethesda to make millions upon millions, and I’m not even saying that the concept doesn’t geek me out at the core of my being. But I am saying that the conventions of the genre clash so strongly with the legacy of the series that I fear it would become something else entirely. At its worst, it would become “just another fantasy MMO,” and at its best its success might spell the end for any future single-player games in one of the world’s most beloved gaming franchises. Put it this way: when’s the last that any of you heard any news about Warcraft IV?

Kill 25 falmer and call me in the morning.

Not Looking For Group

The very idea of games like Oblivion and Skyrim seems at odds with an MMORPG. For one, the fame of the Elder Scrolls series rests on a level of immersion that just can’t survive in the genre. I still remember my worries about winning the Ashlanders over to my cause in Morrowind more than I remember the storylines of every raid in Rift, and I remain proud of my meticulously alphabetized library in Skyrim’s Markarth. At the very least, I liked the way shop owners would rush in to see what I was up to when I started to sneak around in their bedrooms. And since there weren’t a gazillion other heroes running around in both games, I could believe that the fate of the land depended on the success my actions. I love a good MMORPG, but the best of them thrive on the ad-hoc stories that we make with other players. The world itself is but a backdrop. In an Elder Scrolls game (without mods), nothing is so important as the world and its lore. Its story somewhat becomes our story, and as with other excellent RPGs, experiencing it about the closest we can come to having interactive fiction books.

Even if the Dark Brotherhood became a faction that players could grind reputation points for, I worry that it would lose its personality. All that immersion goes out the portcullis the second someone starts making Obama jokes and lewd puns about the Wabbajack in general chat channels. And even if Bethesda managed to make a leveling experience that approximated the experience of the series’ single-player games, endgame would run the danger of amounting to would-be heroes loitering around in the Imperial City asking if anyone wanted to group for a Murmilnir raid. Even if the Dark Brotherhood became a faction that players could grind reputation points for, I worry that it would lose its personality. Memorable figures like Nazir would devolve into bland nobodies that players retrieved quests from without reading the quest text. Assassination targets, if they existed at all, would respawn three minutes later. At least the Night Mother would be right at home sitting in place and never moving like King Varian Wrynn in World of Warcraft’s Stormwind, but players would lose the immersion of knowing that her whispers were meant for them alone.

This just wouldn’t be as cool in a raid.

The concerns surrounding the Elder Scrolls’ compatibility with MMOs go far deeper than quibbles about the conflicting philosophies of single-player versus multiplayer games. There’s also the series’ signature bland combat to worry about, with its sword fights that look only mildly more advanced than Minecraft’s and overpowered storm atronachs that pummel bosses while your mage chills out under the effects of an invisibility spell. It usually works in games like Skyrim because the story and environments usually make up for the combat’s shortcomings, but combat has always held priority over story in the best MMORPGs. To ensure the survival of an Elder Scrolls MMO, Bethesda would have to introduce an entirely different combat setup that will inevitably be labeled a TERA or a World of Warcraft clone to a large segment of players. And then again we have the issue of such a project feeling like a different franchise entirely.

The Need for a Dov-Orkin

Even if Bethesda manages to pull this off, there’s the issue of bugs. Over the years, the swarm of bugs at the launch of an Elder Scrolls game has become such a staple of the experience that much of the gaming community just embraces them as part of the series’ charm. After all, in most cases you can just revert to a previous save and the problem usually fixes itself. In an MMORPG setting–c’mon, admit it–players would crucify Bethesda for slips like this. Never mind that they’ve created some of the best games in gaming history, recent events with BioWare prove that we’d see hundreds of user reviews popping up on Metacritic calling Bethesda a “noob studio that never had a good game.” Remember the buggy Hunted: The Demon’s Forge and its frustrating issues with online cooperative play? Bethesda didn’t develop that, but they did publish it. An Elder Scrolls massively multiplayer game might suffer from those same issues on a massively maddening scale.

Now where did that building disappear to?

Finally, there are the visuals. Regardless of whatever form an MMO version of the Elder Scrolls series takes, I think it’s safe to say that you can forget about something approaching the photorealism of sites like Skyrim’s Bleak Falls Barrow. Even some of the genre’s better visuals (such as those in TERA and Guild Wars 2) lean toward a slightly cartoony or conceptual style in the name of wide accessibility that might turn off a large segment of players. Whatever form it takes, an Elder Scrolls MMO will likely feel and look vastly different than any other entry into the series to date, and then the question becomes one of whether an Elder Scrolls MMO could rightfully be called an Elder Scrolls game at all.

A Reckoning Is At Hand

I believe the better chance for MMO success lies with Kingdoms of Amalur, Ken Rolston’s bastard child of the Elder Scrolls franchise. I like to think of KoA: Reckoning as “Elder Scrolls Lite” because it comes close to approximating the experience of the Elder Scrolls series while ditching the more heady aspects of the franchise in the name of simple fun. That’s what the series needs to be successful as an MMO, but it’s important to remember that it ceases to be the Elder Scrolls in the process. Reckoning is also not without its problems–including a stupidly overpowered meteor spell and a hard mode that leaves you wondering if you have it on “casual”–but it better approximates experiences that would carry over to an MMO settings.

Better than fighting yet another dragon.

From an MMO player’s standpoint, Kingdoms of Amalur also has its priorities straight. There’s no need to sit through all that lore “fluff” if you want to enjoy Reckoning since the combat’s always the main attraction, and I’m sure that this tendency will carry over into the MMORPG version. I personally skipped through 90% of the story (to the point that I knew key characters only by such monikers as “that sexy elf” right up until the final boss fight) but I completed every last side quest out of sheer appreciation for what Reckoning does well. Even now, KoA: Reckoning is my “veg out” game of choice as nothing clears my mind more than logging on and slaughtering hordes of Tuatha with my magey rogue.

Skyrim’s five months of existence has only seen a barrage of bug fixes. So far, 38 Studios seems to have its act together. Reckoning has already seen a couple of content patches despite its February release, whereas Skyrim’s five months of existence has only seen a barrage of bug fixes. That will translate well when they release the massively multiplayer version. Its Fable-meets-WoW visual style (love it or hate it) already fits the genre well, and the design of its current instanced dungeons would make an easy import into an MMO. In fact, Kingdoms of Amalur faces almost the exact opposite situation as the Elder Scrolls series: Reckoning is a “good” RPG at best, but it has the potential to be a incredibly satisfying MMORPG.

Admit it, Fable never looked that good.

Even so, with World of Warcraft, TERA, Guild Wars 2, Rift, Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest II, Final Fantasy XIV, and others fighting for attention of the same audience and spreading its population too thin, the appearance of either one of these games only begs the question: Do we really need another fantasy themed MMORPG at this point?

One of the key themes being presented with the new monk class is arcade brawlers, and the new windwalker specialization delivers this in spades. I spent my youth getting rocked by Sagat in Street Fighter II on the SNES and I’ve enjoyed the genre ever since. From my time on the beta with windwalkers, here’s three abilities that immediately evoke my childhood. Sorry, brewmasters and mistweavers; these abilities are only for those of us who can kick back and knuckle up.

Flying Serpent Kick Josh Myers touched on this in his earlier article on monk abilities, but remember Liu Kang’s signature flying kick from Mortal Kombat? It’s here, and it’s every bit as awesome now as it was then. Hit Flying Serpent Kick and your windwalker takes off at what appears to be epic mount speed, which lasts for several seconds (about 100 yards of travel). Click again and he lands, damaging and slowing anything in the area. This doesn’t hit overly hard, but combined with Roll, it’s amazing maneuverability around the battlefield. I used to call feral druids the fastest spec on the battlefield, but not anymore. Forget Heroic Leap; this is now my favorite ability in the game.

Fists of Fury Instead of Liu Kang, your Windwalker now calls upon E.Honda’s Hundred Hand Slap from SFII. This channeled ability, a core part of our AoE rotation, causes everything in a cone-shaped area in front of the windwalker to be stunned and take massive damage. While the positioning of this ability is still buggy on the beta (sometimes things get hit, sometimes they don’t), this ability, in combination with Tigereye Brew, enables windwalkers to lay down some major AoE damage.

Rising Sun Kick Continuing with the Street Fighter theme, this kick resembles Ryu and Ken’s nasty roundhouse which lost me several matches (I liked aerial attacks). This move will be a key part of both the single-target and AoE rotations of the windwalker, due to its ability to increase the amount of damage taken. So far, my only problem with it is its ability (combined with Fists of Fury) to rip threat off tanks, which makes me feel good as I’m dying horribly.

Is it time for a similar place in the Warcraft world? Where do I have to create myself with players of the opposing faction are, of course, is outside of BGs or Arena, or group affiliation, etc. Tol Barad alliance.

However, I doubt that there is a place still so …

Minecraft, a game populated all around the world with an incredible speed, is famous for its ultimate imagination and unlimited building resources, which means, you could build a world whether it appears in the real world or in your imagination.

Minecraft is released on May 17, 2009 by a Swedish person named Notch Persson. Now this game is run by Notch’s company Mojang. Since its coming out, news, debates and guides on it have never been ended.

So, my dear friends, if you haven’t even tried this game, I promise it would be a great pity in your game life. Now, you only need $ 9.89 to play a game that has already been sold over 3000000 units.

Why I say that? cause yeah, WOW is really under challenge and its circumstance is really dangerous.
lot’s of new games are released, and all of them are very good. although there are not enough games that can be wonderful as WOW, they have their strenth. most of games recently released are more potential to be free of charge. not to mention others, let’s take Age of Empire Online as an example, this game is released yesterday. and it’s seriously very attractive.
As we know, Age of Empire series was PC version. They are quite interesting and playable. Such a game is free of charge, we can see its potential easily. Anyway, we won’t play a game that’s qually good but charged as another game. Surely, Age of Empire Online is not as good as WOW, but let’s imagine in the future, what if we have a such game. which one will you choose, I guess and bet you will choose the other one but not WOW.
